Space blanket – tested in space: Developed by NASA in the early 1960s as a “space blanket” to protect spacecraft from heat and to shield astronauts from extreme temperatures in space, the thin PET film with an aluminium coating was used on Earth for the first time in 1978. It was then also handed out at the New York Marathon to runners at the finish line to help them retain warmth.

All-round talent with enormous tear resistance of 480 kg: Compactly packed, weighing only 50 g and an indispensable component of first aid. Especially in mountaineering, the emergency blanket has become indispensable. It can be used as an improvised tourniquet, as a temporary bandage or, thanks to its incredible tear resistance of up to 480 kg, for transporting casualties. Since it allows only 1% of dangerous UV radiation to pass through and is also transparent, it can be used for UV protection and as a substitute glacier goggles.

Caution when using: It is important to apply the blanket correctly to ensure its functionality. This means that the blanket must not be placed directly on bare skin, but over the innermost layer of clothing. Because the rescue blanket consists of a metallic alloy, direct contact with the skin would conduct heat away – thus achieving exactly the opposite effect.

Further possible uses: Even at high outside temperatures, the emergency blanket can provide valuable services by being stretched out as a sun sail, used when camping to cover tents and vehicles, attached to windows to reduce the heating of a room, and much more.

In model making, emergency blankets are used to cover wings. Stunt kites can also be covered with the material of the foil blanket.
